Come to a Flex in the City pilates class with us.

When it comes to exercise, sometimes it can be hard to find the time to fit it in amongst a busy work schedule. However, the benefits of exercising alongside our work lives are hard to ignore. When Julette, the owner of Flex in the City pilates studio, invited us to pop in for an early Monday morning class we were interested to see how this would impact our focus & productivity for the work day ahead. We found that we were really able to switch off during the class & focus our attention to what we were doing which left us feeling refreshed and ready to take on our to do list!

What is reformer pilates?

Pilates is an incredible low-impact, total body conditioning form of movement that significantly adds to your quality of life. Reformer Pilates uses spring resistance to strengthen and stretch the entire body and is incredibly effective in strengthening the core and alleviating low back pain, upper back and neck tension, stiff and tight hips and lots of other niggles that are so common when working at a desk.Pilates bodies move well and are not only toned and supple, Pilates bodies boast that posture that used to be reserved for ex-dancers!

The benefits of pilates

At Flex, we are powered by a passion for people and their goals and motivation. We use Pilates to stretch and strengthen, certainly, but for us, taking time for a Pilates class is so much more than the physical benefits. It's creating a space to breathe, to build confidence, to nuture the relationship between you and your body. It's a studio space that is welcoming, where friendly and wildly interesting people come together to exercise (we have met the most incredible people at Flex over the years and know of many now firm friends who met on the reformer). The busier your life becomes, the more important it is to intentionally build a wellness routine into your life.

Finding the balance

As a business owner, I know the day to day challenge of managing a premises, a team and clients, as well as the (sometimes self-induced!) pressure of growing the business, expanding the team and leading Flex into the future (and all while still trying to have some kind of #balance!). For me, booking and showing up to Pilates is more than just the movement. It's a gentle reminder to prioritse not only myself, but my health. A reminder that I deserve to feel well in my own body, and that when I make time for Pilates, I am more creative, and consistently make better work decisions.

Pilates is an opportunity to lean into the physical challenge of exercise, and that strength spills over into the rest of my day, building confidence that I can meet challenges in all aspects of my life. The concentration and precision that Pilates requires allows me to quiet my mind in a way I don't experience when I run or lift weights (even though I do and love both!). Pilates is an opportunity to tune out of the world and into your body, to have the teacher take the reins and guide you through the exercises, to be present for an hour without having to even try.

Pilates & overall wellness

Exercise doesn't have to be an all-out sweat session to be effective and Pilates is a phenomenal way to exercise without adding more stress to your nervous system (ideal for days when you feel like you have less energy for a high intensity session but you *know* will feel better after some movement).

Movement always creates a change, stretching physical stiffness and strengthening phyiscal weak spots but it also releases mental blocks and helps you find clarity in the busyness of everyday life. Whether it's a Pilates class, a run, a gym session, consistently making time for exercise will deliver enormous rewards.

Thank you so much to Julette at Flex in the City for having us in to try a pilates class, we will definitely be back again soon.
